You are all cordially invited to a hot chocolate party – Colombian Style. Yes, yes, I still love coffee. But as much as we Colombians love coffee, we also have other hot beverages we love. Aguapanela and hot chocolate, for example.
But! let’s celebrate. What are we celebrating? That we made it through yet another year, I suppose. But mainly, that we are friends, even if virtual ones.
So I’m making a big pot of delicious hot chocolate Colombian style for all of you to enjoy. And we’ll be having it with fresh double cream Colombian cheese. It melts in the hot chocolate and create a chewy yumminess in your mouth.
Ready?
We start with real Colombian chocolate:
Then we need the proper tools:
Then we put the milk and the chocolate in the chocolate pot and we heat it up on the stove to melt the chocolate. We whisk it with the molinillo by placing your hands around it as shown in the picture and move them back and forth to make the molinillo spin. We do this every now and then, and watch the temperature so it doesn’t spill.
We let the milk raise a couple of times without letting it fully boil, frothing vigorously every single time. Then we carefully pour it in a mug and serve with cheese. I like to cut the cheese in somewhat small pieces and put it in the mug before pouring the hot chocolate so it melts better. But some people prefer to serve it on a side plate and eat it alone or add it to the chocolate later. I guess that since this is a party and all, I should serve the cheese in individual plates and let you have it in any way you prefer.
So this little chocolate party is to show my appreciation to all of you, fellow bloggers that read the craziness that is my blog.
to the ones that started with me, and to the ones that came along as the year of 2012 grew old. But especially, for those of you who stuck around despite everything, my MIA period, the heartwrenching posts, the dark posts, sending me healing thoughts/prayers/good vibes on and off-line.
A big hug in particular to Sandee, Anita, Ruby Tuesday and Dad Knows for never failing to be there no matter how hard my posts were! I know that sometimes, my posts are hard to read. I know they can make some people uncomfortable. But think about it, the more painful they look, the harder I am trying to reach out and you**** were always there for me. And for that, you have my most sincere thanks and my love!

hahaha well, we mostly drink coffee with breakfast, lunch and dinner. As for mediasnueves and onces sometimes we have coffee too. But of all of those meals, onces are the meals that more often than not will have either aguapanela or chocolate instead of coffee. Also, it depends on the region. In Bogota, most people prefer chocolate for breakfast instead of coffee. But there’s ALWAYS room for a tinto :)

I’m not a cheesecake fan so I doubt I’d like the cheese in hot chocolate but it looks festive. People always think I’m odd though as I’ve never much liked cheese in any but the smallest of quantities. Thanks for sharing your New Years custom. I forgot you’re in Columbia. My New Years celebrations are positively understated. Actually, I hardly ever do anything. Sometimes I don’t even bother to stay up ’til midnight! I’m 30 but I act 100 sometimes, LOL ;)

I am not in Colombia anymore. I live in Canada but I keep some of the traditions I grew up with. The good ones, of course.
We don’t normally have that hot chocolate on New Years Eve. We just party hard on that evening! :)
Oops, lol. I knew I was confused for a reason! Has it been difficult to adjust to the cold? I’ve lived here(Canada) my whole life and still don’t like the winter weather and cold temperatures. Likely that’s b/c I’m on the coast and we’re milder than the rest of the country so I’m “soft”, LOL!
Not at all. I loved winter and the cold and I moved here precisely because it was way too hot where I lived. I love skating and skiing and walking in the snow :)
That’s good then :) . I guess I don’t enjoy winter much b/c I have physical health issues that make it uncomfortable for me in winter conditions. But even if I didn’t I don’t think I’d be very ‘outdoorsy’ anyhow.
Ah, sorry to hear about your health issues. I can relate to that. I have fibromyalgia so the cold does make the pain a bit more annoying. But I go into heat exhaustion very easily, plus I sunburn like crazy so Summer is much more unbearable for me. I have always been the outdoorsy type but can’t go out in the heat so my life in Colombia was pretty miserable.
Instead, I layer up like crazy, and go out in the winter :)
Haha, you have a positive attitude about it. I’m not a fan of summer either as my asthma, allergies and sinus issues get worse in the heat and humidity. Fall is my favourite season :)
The hot chocolate sounds delicious but this kiwi isn’t too sure about cheese in it. That just sounds bizarre. :-)

Chocolate and chilli is delicious. Actually I’ve got a Mexican Hot Chocolate mix which has cinnamon, chilli and black pepper. It’s great for warming up on a cold day… but it’s summer here at the moment. :\
A lot of people like it. I just don’t like the swet-savoury mix. Chocolate and chili was a sacred drink for the Aztects. But since I’m not about to enter a deadly sacred game, I’ll have my hot chocolate without the chili ;)
You just have cheese instead… and enjoy! :-D
ah yes. But that’s the trick, you see. The cheese we use is a fresh, non salted cheese that we use for desserts. We have all different kinds of cheese of course. I would never put a salted or ripe cheese in my chocolate :)

I’ve actually tried chocolate (like bar chocolate) with chili powder in it, which for a long time I couldn’t imagine, and (to my surprise) I think it’s quite good!

I had the exact same thought, Cate. But now I’m think of a sweet Italian cheese, like mascarpone, or even really good ricotta — but then that wouldn’t be the right consistency! Maybe once melted, hmmm. . .
mmmm mascarpone… so good. But you’re right, not the right consistency. The trick is to use the right cheese. It has to be fresh, not ripe. I haven’t tried them but I’m thinking cheese curds would do as well
