That Illustration Thing

A few weeks back, I wrote a post titled Moi, a graphic designer?.

I was not trying to be cute. Okay, fine, I was trying to be cute, but I was half joking. The thought of me being a graphic designer made me laugh. Graphic designers go to school for four years to learn how to be graphic designers, right?

So, lol, no. I couldn’t possibly be one myself.

But thing is, I am getting kinda good at it. I am even getting commissions from family and close friends. Furthermore, I’m getting all sorts of great feedback from real graphic designers. You know, the pros?

I’m in shock!

In shock, I say! Continue reading

Art & Science and Oh, squeeee!

I went on the intertubes to look for Illustrator tutorials. I swear.

Somehow I got tricked into reading the articles suggested on my Medium digest.

But that was okay because one of the suggested articles had the words Art, Math and Science in its title. I mean, I just had to read it, right? It also had a preview of a delightful illustration, the kind I had always dreamed of creating myself. Sealed, signed and delivered. I had no choice.

The more I read, the more squeeing noises were heard at my place.

I was that little girl too. What you see below is a fairly accurate representation of the shape of my dreams when I was in elementary school.

Finally Spilling the Beans

You may have heard me or The Fiancé drop the Geek Squared Art phrase around here, FB and/or Twitter. I even mentioned I so wanted to tell you about the big news.

Well, here it is:

THE BIG NEWS

Geek² Art Logo

To quote The Fiancé (a.k.a. Geek Boy or The Other Half of Geek²):

Claudia and I are starting a new venture, probing our creative sides and calling it Geek Squared Art. It being Claudia, of course we have a web page AND a facebook page Geek Squared Art). We’re in the early stages of things, so you can expect much more in the coming weeks. Thanks for popping over and liking the page – hint, hint..

We also have a Twitter account: @Geek2Art (pronounced Geek-squared-Art* and not Geek-two-Art).

So, yeah. We’re a small, local, family-operated business now. It doesn’t get any more grassroots than that. How hipster-ish of us. However, I don’t think Geek Boy is losing 40 lbs and growing a beard any time soon. Geek Girl was donning scarves & hats way before the Hipster movement so I don’t know if that counts… um, yeah… The Fiancé is not the only UnFocused geek here.

Okay. Geek² Art (or Geek Squared Art, whichever you prefer). We  will be selling arts & crafts handmade by yours truly and photographs taken by The UnFocused Fiancé.

We expect to sell LOTS of those so we can get on with our dream of opening a Cat Sanctuary.

Now, if you please, hop over to the Geek² Art website, Facebook page, or Twitter feed. Subscribe, like or follow us if you feel so inclined.  But most importantly, get your wallets ready because we’ll be opening our Etsy shop pretty soon.

Just kidding.

About the getting your wallets ready part. Not about the Etsy shop part. But you know, X-mas season is just around the corner….

Well, I finally lost my marbles

Actually, I was never in possession of any marbles. I was born marbleless.

However, my friends, I consider that an asset. As other – very wise people, have pointed out:

“I am not eccentric. It’s just that I am more alive than most people. I am an unpopular electric eel set in a pond of catfish.”
― Edith Sitwell

And holy cow, can I ever be unpopular sometimes. Then, there’s this one:

Of course eccentrics are happy, they’re loony toons. They don’t know they aren’t supposed to be anything but joyous.
JAN HORNUNG, This Is the Truth, as Far as I Know: I Could Be Wrong

That’s why I am a bundle of giggles most of the time. Unless I am a bundle of tears. In that case, I am not joyous. But then… oh, look! washi tape!!!! and I am back to being a bundle of giggles and squeeeeeeees again.

The Geeks’ Flat is witnessing a lot of nesting efforts lately. One the the areas with the fastest growing rate is my Art(s) [& Crafts] Nook. It started as a Drawing Nook, with sketch pads, drawing markers, colour pencils, sketch pencils, a couple of Really Useful boxes and an original TJ Lubrano*.

My little art(s) [& crafts] nook is coming along nicely. Note the super geeky and super environmentally conscious solar-powered lamp. And my Yoda bucket.

Crazy COLOURlover

Remember when I told you about my new thing? Well, I am having a grand old time with designing stuff. I found this awesome site called COLOURlovers (and yes, It has the right spelling! w00t w00t) and apparently I now eat and breathe colours.

I am having so much fun. I am still a n00b, of course, but I am getting the gist of it. I still don’t have the skill to create my own pattern templates but I am starting to get good at creating nice patterns with other people’s templates.

Wanna see?

This is my most recent one and the one I like the most so far! I am very happy with it :)

My New Thing

Planning #GeekSquaredWed (Yes, I did just use a hashtag), has taken me to an unexpected journey. Unfortunately not that kind of unexpected journey. Dwarves and Wizards are yet to knock of my door but I haven’t lost hope. And to be honest, I’d rather have elves knocking on my door, anyway. I’m more into singing to the stars than into digging in mines for jewels.

Anyway, journey. Yes.

Long story short, one of the things I ended up doing was signing in for a DeviantART account (and this is going to make Sidlet 1 very happy as she had been wanting me to do so for quite a while). Another one was dabbling in digital art.

A Little Kindness Goes A Long Way

I am sitting here absolutely bawling.

I was having a hard day. Beyond horrible. All I’ll say here is that I was forced to relive things I don’t even want to remember and I got triggered big time.

I’ve been in limbo all day. Absolutely numb.

And then, I had to get up for something and realized the mail had come. There was a package for me!

Naturally,  I did what every sane person would do. I ran to get my phone so I could take pictures :)

Do you recognize the sender?

Arting in Lansingland

I seem to have hit a major hindrance in blogging. It is not for lack of time or lack of subject. I have plenty of both. But I just can’t get started. It’s been more than a month since my last post and I even started one -which is still in draft, about Black History Month. Imagine! We’re past mid-March now.

So, since I can’t write, I’ll just share with you some of the drawings I did while in Lansingland. Yes, I did bring most of my art supplies with me. Of course I did. A girl can’t travel without them, you know…

Thing is, the Sidlets really like to draw. And they are both quite good in their different styles, I must say. They spend a lot of time arting, which I think is just the awesome. As it turned out, they really liked my pens and coloured pencils. One day, Sidlet # 2 was getting acquainted with my felt tip pens and drew several kitties, declaring that the pen was awesome. Then she moved onto homework and promptly forgot about the kitties. I – however, didn’t. I saved them, cut them out and gave them a playground:
